Wiring Kits - An ideal upgrade for every Stratocaster®
This is a straight, by the numbers wiring kit that’s suitable for almost every Stratocaster® ever built.
Anyone whos used our kits in the past may remember that we made them entirely customisable, with a huge range of pots, switches and caps – and whilst it was great to be able to offer that wide a range, it was a pain for the customer, and it was a pain for us, so we’ve gone back to basics here.
You’re getting three 250k, vintage audio taper CTS pots, all brass collar and post, split shaft to take our UFO knobs, and suitable to use on every single coil made by anyone in the last 70 years! The pots themselves are of a fantastically high quality. Rather than use the standard (or modern) audio taper, we’ve utilised the increasingly popular vintage taper, which is a little more responsive at the lower end of the scale, CTS have moved heaven and earth to get us the results we wanted here. The tolerances great – we state that it’s 10%, which is what we state as a minimum at manufacture, but in real terms – expect them to be a lot tighter than that! The batch on the desk at the moment is all within about 3% of the 250k mark.
Whilst the pots are the real show pony of this kit, we’ve not cut corners with the rest of the gear either – Switchcraft mono socket, 22 AWG vintage cloth wire, Cornell Dubliner (former Sprague) Orange drops (still customisable too) and the incredibly popular Axesrus 5 way lever switch.
This is the wiring kit we use on all our assemblies, all our pre-wired looms, in all of our own guitars and on all of the Axesrus pickup recordings –doesn’t really get much higher end then this.
So probably the big question that we’re going to field on this one is “why do away with all the customisation?” – the answers pretty straight forward to be honest - 99% of the kits we sold consisted of 3 audio taper 250k pots, a 5 way switch and a 0.022 cap.
Pretty obviously really if you know a little about your Stratocaster® wiring, but if this is all new to you – that’s the “standard” setup. It works absolutely perfectly with any single coil on the planet, it gives the widest tonal range, and it’s what you’ll find on almost every Fender® ever made.
Now the easiest way out of this would be for us to just say “Yeah! It’s that way because it’s always been that way!” – and whilst that’d be a bit of a cop out, its not completely true either.
Lets cover the historic aspect of it all first, if you’re after that 50s/60s tone – start off with a 0.1 cap – that’s what the original Stratocaster® used, and it’s a good jumping off point.
If your after a later 60s/70s tone, a 0.047 cap could be a nice way to nail it, it’ll make your tone just that little darker as you dial down, and can actually be quite pleasing.
But, normally, and if you’re talking Strat® caps to anyone – chances are it’ll be a 0.022 that you want. Whilst they might not be “vintage correct” – chances are they’ll give you the very best tone, regardless of the pickups your using, and would be present in most guitars nowadays.
Now the pots – why are we only offering 250ks in this setup? Ultimately – it’s because they sound the best when used with single coil pickups (don’t worry Fat Strat® players – there’s a kit for you too!) – Unless you’ve got some hugely specific setup on your guitar (a set of DiMarzio® S Sized Humbuckers spring to mind), chances are you won’t ever need a standard 5 way switching setup with anything other than 250k pots (obviously, if you do, let us know and we can always substitute parts out – no problems there!) and that means we can offer a better product across the board because we know what its meant to be used for.
So in short, If you want to upgrade the wiring on your Stratocaster®, be it a Fender®, a Squier® or just something with a similar shape, you’re rocking 3 single coils, and you want 5 switch settings – this kits the one for you, and we provide everything you’ll need to do it yourself, and at a nice little saving compared to buying the parts separately.
