This is a conversion plate for the Fender® Jaguar® (specifically the USA model) routed for use with a toggle switch, as a way of simplifying the switching.
The “3 hole” version of the bass control plate appeared at the very birth of the instrument in 1960, and ran through all of 61 and into the early part of 1962. Conversely, most of the ’62 re-issues sport this style of plate, whilst the majority of the originals seem to come with the “4 hole” version.
Following on from the "3 Hole" version, the "4 hole" version became the standard part used on basses from 1962 until the modern era.

This is one of the control plates you will need for the Fender® Jaguar®. Fulfilling a purely functional role in the grand scheme of things, it is simply there to provide mounting for the volume and tone controls as well as the jack socket.

A standard control plate for the Telecaster®, with a standard switch slot, and two pot holes large enough to take CTS pots. Fantastically well finished, with a high level of electroplating.
There doesn’t seem to be a hard and fast rule, but it’s simply a job of measuring to find out which spec fits you’re guitar. This version is 34mm at the widest point, and is drilled for 3/8" pot threads. These used to be a VERY common size on Squier® guitars, but in recent years, they've only really been fitted to G&L models.
