Late 50s Single Coils

A Classic Turning Point

Our Late 50s single coils are a favourite of ours — they capture a quiet turning point in guitar history, ticking along thanks to a die-hard following from some of the biggest names in music.

Wound using 42 AWG Formvar insulated copper to around 6KΩ, and utilising 3/16” poles, the Late 50s capture that touchstone moment perfectly, capable of nailing some of the most iconic Strat® tones we associate with Blues and Rock.

A Little Potted History

The Tele® came first, but in 1954 the Strat® turned the world on its head. Country was evolving into Rock & Roll, teenagers were becoming a thing, and Fender® timed the Stratocaster® to perfection. Too “sexy” to be a country instrument, with curves and colours reminiscent of sports cars of the day, it was the guitar for teenagers — sex appeal with strings.

Early Strats and the Push for “Angrier” Tones

From 1954 to 1956, “Early” Strats were bright, twangy, and slightly raspy — a notable departure from the Telecaster®’s muscular bridge/ jazzy neck tones. Early models were around 5.5–5.7KΩ, same wire, same magnets. But musicians were pushing for hotter, angrier sounds — crunchy, gritty, and prone to distortion.

Fender® responded by adding more wire in 1957, giving pickups a hotter 6KΩ rating. This shifted the resonant peak lower, increased bass, and made amps break up earlier — but it also added natural compression that wasn’t ideal for maintaining definition with distortion.

Close, But No Cigar

The 1957 pickups didn’t quite hit the mark for all players. While hotter and louder, they lacked some clarity, and if you wanted uber-clean twang or controlled distortion, Gibson® and Danelectro® were often doing it better. Fender® also debuted the V-profile necks the same year, which weren’t universally loved. The 57 Strat® was, for a while, neither lunch nor dinner.

Finding Its Niche

By 1958-59, Fender® returned to earlier specs (this time with rosewood fretboards), which caught on. The 57 Strat and pickups that inspired the Late 50s found their moment much later, as a new generation of musicians in the late 60s and 70s rediscovered them. The extra body, warmth, and smoothness of the 57 pickups were perfect for blues-rock and country-rock bands, filling sonic space beautifully.

Why the Late 50s Pickups Matter

The Late 50s pickups shine in modern contexts for players seeking soulful, warm, and richly textured tones. Not ideal for 1957 doo-wop, but if you want sweet, expressive Strat® blues, they’re unmatched. Fuller than mid-50s models, they lack some bite and twang, but most music — clean or slightly overdriven — benefits from their natural compression and character.

They’re a cornerstone of our lineup: not capable of everything, a touch “lardy” at times, but utterly fantastic for most modern blues and rock contexts.

5 of 5 Amazing fat 50s single coils January 12, 2018

A strat single coil that captures the classic 50s sound - fatter sounding than later pickups with a warmer almost P90 like tone makes by them very versatile and great for blues, country, classic rock and rockabilly.
Out of all my single coils, they are my favourites (including Fender Tex Mex) - they stand out as having a warmth to them which still retains all the sparkle of a strat pickup with none of the brittleness they often suffer. There’s also a magical singing quality that comes out clean, or at the edge of break up in the upper mids (not so much when under higher gain but definitely clean and cranked) where the notes really swell - and for arpeggios or chords, especially dyads triads the notes melt into each other yet you can still hear the separation. Neck and middle never used to be a selection I used much but I can’t stop playing with that selection on these.

In my HSS strat they go really well with the Dimarzio Virtual PAF I have in the bridge. Truly awesome

5 of 5 Neck - Fender Classic 50 August 30, 2017
Reviewer: Jonathan M Leonard from Swansea, United Kingdom
This is a really nice pickup. Rich, rounded, lush. Low E pole piece is taller than usual, appears this is a deliberate design choice, and a good one at that. As said in the sales pitch, this gives a tight bottom end. Not muddy just clear.
A great pickup for blues, clean or edgy breakup, and even high gain, just works well all round.
