Pole Staggering: What’s the Deal?

A common question with no straight answer. Here’s the context so you can understand why pickups are staggered and when it matters.

Why Staggering Exists

Single coil pickups traditionally come with staggered poles to balance string volume. Wound strings are quieter than plain strings due to less steel in their wraps, and ’50s Strat necks (7 1/4" radius) had strings sitting further from the pickup face.

  • Typical staggering: E & A = 17.5mm, D & G = 18mm, B = 16.5mm, high E = 17mm
  • Earliest Strats had slightly different staggering; G string was 17.5mm, making it quiet
  • “Normal” staggering introduced in 1956

Why It Still Matters

Even with flatter modern necks and fewer wound Gs, staggering persists because it shapes the classic Strat sound we know and love. It’s not strictly necessary today, but it sounds right.

  • Used since 1954 to create the familiar Strat tone
  • Maintains tonal balance across strings
  • Part of the tradition and aesthetic of vintage pickups

The Exception: Ultra-Flat Necks

For guitars with 12", 14", or compound radii, staggering can actually introduce imbalance. Non-staggered poles may give more consistent string volume, especially for HSS/HSH setups or very low action guitars.

  • Vintage replicas & warts-and-all reissues: staggered poles are ideal
  • Modern guitars based on 7 1/4"–9 1/2" radius: staggering still works
  • Ultra-flat necks, HSS/HSH setups, very low action: non-staggered poles give most consistent results

Summary

Staggering isn’t better or worse — it’s tradition and a subtle factor in that classic Strat sound.
