Guild® HB1 Style Covers – Styling Without the Specifics

These covers are in the style of those found on the classic Guild® HB1 “oversized” humbuckersbut that’s not actually what they’re made for.

In reality, these are standard humbucker covers with the HB1-style embossed surrounds around the pole pieces. That means there’s nothing stopping you from fitting them to any regular humbucker, as long as the pole spacing matches up.

The Problem with Real HB1s

Here’s where things get tricky.
The original HB1 pickups — and at least some of the later "reissue" versions — are slightly wider than a standard humbucker and use a narrower pole spacing (around 47mm, to the best of my knowledge).
I’m not going to claim to be an expert on Guild pickup specs, but if you want to dive deep into the weeds, there’s a fantastic resource by Gary A. Donahue that goes into serious detail — so good, in fact, that he’s got his own section on this topic!

Will They Fit?

  • Original HB1s?
Probably not. These covers won’t line up properly — the pickups are wider, the spacing is narrower, and things just won’t sit right.

  • Guild HB2s?
From what’s been recorded, HB2s are standard-sized humbuckers, so these covers should fit without issue.

  • Other guitars?
Absolutely. These are primarily designed to "convert" regular humbuckers into something that visually matches up with the HB1 look — particularly useful if you're trying to blend old Guild styling into a more modern or aftermarket build.

And yes — while real HB1 humbuckers are about 1.8mm wider, it is technically possible to fit a standard humbucker into a vintage HB1 pickup ring, with a bit of creative engineering.

Just So We're Clear

The embossed detailing is entirely cosmetic. It has no tonal impact.
But if you're after that classic HB1 aesthetic, without needing to mod your pickup routes or hunt down niche parts, this is a great solution.

But let’s be honest: humbucker covers aren’t just for show. There’s a bit more to them, and depending on your setup, they can have a noticeable impact. So to keep things straightforward (and useful), we’ve broken the topic down below so you can jump to whatever’s relevant for your build:

  • Pole spacing – why it's crucial for fit and performance

  • Brass vs German silver – how the material affects tone

  • Size and shape differences – not all covers are created equal

  • How to fit them – soldering, slipping, or swearing involved

  • Colour options – from chrome to relic’d nickel and beyond

  • Real photos – warts and all, so you know exactly what you’re getting

If you’re unsure about anything, just drop us a message—whether you’re chasing tone, chasing looks, or chasing your tail, we’ll get you pointed in the right direction.
