This is the "reflector plate" that sits under the bobbins on a mini humbucker which has bar magnet poles, as seen on the Gibson® Firebird.

Its argued that this little steel bar is designed to increase the iron content within the circuit, which increases the inductance, and partially causes the 2 poles to act as a horse shoe magnet - and whilst it certainly does this, we think its probably just been invented to stop the bobbins jumping around during construction!
