The “3 hole” version of the bass control plate appeared at the very birth of the instrument in 1960, and ran through all of 61 and into the early part of 1962. Conversely, most of the ’62 re-issues sport this style of plate, whilst the majority of the originals seem to come with the “4 hole” version.

In an attempt to improve on designs seen previously on the sister model and other guitars, the early versions sported 2 “stacked” pots, which acted as a “2 in 1” control for both volume and tone. Electrically, they’re a little out of the ordinary as standard, using a 250k/500k concentric pot, with a 0.05 and 0.03 cap (0.047 and 0.033 nowadays) used on Neck and Bridge Pickups respectively.

The final 3rd hole was used for the mono socket, similar to the design seen on the basses previously.

Weird quirk with the 3 hole control plate too - the mounting holes are not counter sunk (but the screws used to mount it, are!) seemingly, it was a design oversight back in the early 60s, but its never been resolved.
