Noiseless singles are absolutely jam packed with propriety parts frankly - but none of them are more important to the functionality then the "Gauss" plate.

The "problem" with stacked/noise cancelling single coils, is that inevitably, the "bottom" coil is excited by the string movement (and the "top" coil being excited and creating its own magnetic field!)

The Gauss plate limits this, by sitting between the coils, and in contact with the magnetic poles within the top coil.

In real terms, this plate becomes a "horse shoe" magnet the the two "tabs" act as the poles, and very little magnetic force is directed "down" into the lower coil (be that magnetic force from the poles or from the magnetic field being generated by the top coil!) - so the "bottom" coil is isolated from the top, and as such, doesn't create signal other then anything self generated (60hz hum) or picked up externally (external interference)

They aren't actually essential, and a noiseless single coil doesn't NEED a gauss plate, but, generally speaking? Your capable of designing a wider range of pickups using one, and getting better sounds from them, with, then without!
