Please be aware, you have opened the "more options" section, which means your really getting into the customisation of the pickups - and thats fantastic! It'll really allow you to make the pickups your own, so wether your looking to make a set that matches up with a certain historic specification, or you'
re trying to match a single pickup to another from a different manufacturer - this is the way to do it!
Its worth keeping in mind though, that with every tweak you make, you'll be getting further and further away from what we'd call the "standard setup", and as such, that means the pickups will come under the remit of Custom work
The HSA290s are a little twist we’ve developed on the popular Late 50s model that’s really pulling up trees in its humbucker form. The original model has been incredibly well received by jazz players looking for that little more authenticity from their tone, but it’s left some of us mere mortals feeling a little cold. The makeup on the L50s is so specialised, we wanted to make something a little more accessible, a little less demanding, and so in a first for the company, we’re actually producing a pickup in house here in the UK!
We’ve actually lowered the number of winds on the coil in a bold move to help balance the neck and bridge pickups tonally, with this set; we’re really trying to get away from the warm neck/sharp bridge combo that’s all too common with P90s.
Combined with a change of magnets from our old favourite, the Alnico 5, we’ve taken inspiration from early PAF humbuckers, and we’ve fitted Alnico 2s to really take pack out the mid range, giving everything a much gentler, softer feel, sucking out a lot of the bite you traditionally get with this sort of pickup, but still retaining the warmth, the twang, and the overall character that instantly barks “P90!”
This is a P90 that not only delivers the tone many of us want, but does it with a subtly and warmth that make it a beautiful pickup to live with day to day.
Ideally suited for Country, Rock, Funk and Blues, the increase in the middle frequency, and the smoothing of the EQ across the range make this much less suited to Jazz then previous models, lacking a little of the definition between the notes many players look for.
Rather than copy other humbucker sized "P90s" on the market, which simply used a single coil bobbin inside a humbucker cover; we've completely engineered these gorgeous pickups from the ground up.
We specially created a “mini P90” bobbin for Butyrate, which is housed in a pure Nickel / German silver cover to limit tonal interference. This really is the closest possible thing to a true P90 as you’ll get from a Humbucker route.
And, for the finishing touches, we’ve not strayed far from original P90 and Humbucker design – fitting the popular braided metal/waxed cloth wire that’s so simple to use, and mounted everything onto another Nickel / German silver base to limiting any unwanted interference on the magnetic eddy currents.
All in all, they might not be historically correct, the might not be hum-bucking, but they really are a beautiful “guitarists guitar” pickup – giving that characteristic P90 snap and twang from the most unlikely guitars.
