Simply Fat - Just the bridge, just the volume - no fuss!
As simple as a Stratocaster® comes - real point and shoot stuff, you get one bridge humbucker of our choice (for more info on the humbuckers available, check out the technical specification tab for links to demo recordings and technical info), you're getting one CTS 500k Audio taper pot, a Switchcraft Mono socket, you're getting it all wired together to the highest standard, and then its mounted onto a pickguard of your choice, with a UFO volume knob (again, your choice!) ready to slam into your guitar, get the strings back on, and put through its paces.
The original plan for the new lines of assemblies was that every humbucker (and every single coil for that matter) came not only in a stand-alone pickup, but also in a few good, workable assembles, ready to drop into your favourite Strat® and it was ready to go! And it seemed great, we managed to get all the customisation in there so you could pretty much make any given assembly up exactly how you wanted it, right down to the font colour on the UFO knobs - alas, as with this sort of thing - there was one problem - the site would have been absolutely over run with assemblies! (Remember, there’s not only the Simply Fat! There’s the Double Fat, The Super Fat, there’s the Deluxe and Custom models for Telecaster® style guitars, there’s the RG® versions for Ibanez®! Basically, it was getting way out of hand - so we've simplified it a little bit, and at the same time, opened up a little bit more customisation, which is always pretty cool.
So now, rather than looking at a Laudanum Assembly, or a Bourbon City Assembly - they're up on site so you can pick which pickups you want (and we'll make sure that they're all the correct winds/polarities/string spacing) - just because it means we don’t have to have 100 products floating around on the site, cluttering the pages up and driving you guys round the bend.
The only thing this does mean though, is that it’s gets a bit fiddle knowing what you're looking at, so we've drawn up this little table as a quick and easy guide, just click on the name if you want to go to the Humbuckers page and it'll give you the sound clip and full write up etc.

Suitable for |
Style and flavour |
Bourbon City |
8.2K, 4.4H, 54.4nf, Alnico II, Formvar |
Hard/Classic/Blues Rock, Country, Pop, |
Medium Output - a modern twist on the classic 50s voicing, a little raunchy, nice full mid-range and a chirpy top end. Great fun, without getting overly “middle of the road” and losing that vintage charm. |
Classic 50 |
7.7K, 4.1H, 53nf, Alnico III, Formvar |
Jazz, Blues, Country |
Vintage Output -the clues in the name - very much a 50s tone, a little hotter perhaps to keep it usable in a modern setting. Beautiful lower mid-range growl gives real presence without making them overly sharp. |
Ethereal |
16K, 6H, 20nf,Alnico V, Plain Enamel |
Progressive, Hard Rock, Pop |
Medium Output - A highly responsive humbucker, the spec reads like something far hotter but actually a very well balanced pickup. Ideal for the virtuoso players out there who want a pickup that'll make translate those lightly picked notes (legato, sweeps etc.) into a workable volume. |
Hot Iron |
14.6K, 10.3H, 33.4nf, Alnico V, Formvar |
Rock, Metal, Punk, Heavy Blues |
High Output - Our go to "Traditionally Hot" humbucker - jam packed mid-range gives them that characteristic honk a lot of rock players crave, distortion gets dark and aggressive, but retains a lot of warmth and clarity in the upper register. |
Insult & Injury |
8.2K, 5H, 53.3nf, Alnico IV, Plain Enamel |
Jazz, Blues, Country, Pop, Light Rock |
Vintage Output - Cool little humbucker, built around an Alnico 4 to help tame out some of the brittle higher frequencies, very much that classic humbucker tone, very versatile, not overly hot, not overly cool. |
Knee Jerk |
7.5K, 3.74H, 56.6nf, Alnico II, Plain Enamel |
Jazz, Blues, Country, Pop, Light Rock |
Vintage Output - Our take on the proper, full fat 50s Humbucker, as warm and woolly as you'll ever want, fairly flat natural EQ - absolute heaven when you push them through an all valve combo. |
Laudanum |
14.8K, 10.7h, 36nf, Alnico III, Formvar |
Hard Rock, Metal, Punk |
High Output - Monstrous humbuckers, hot and heavy, with a heavy mid scoop that retains a little of the bark and bite in the "lower mids" - gives the Laudanum an almost animalistic aggression that we absolutely love. |
Lead Line |
8.2K, 4.5H, 52nf, Alnico V, Plain Enamel |
Classic Rock, 60s RnB, Blues |
Vintage Output - where the knee jerk represents a 50s humbucker, these are the 60s style, they're bright and shiny, fairly heavy scoop in the mid-range, and a little boomy in the bass - a great Fat Strat® tone. |
Model 24 |
11.2K, 4.9H, 30.6nf, Ceramic, Formvar |
Hard Rock, Metal, Punk |
Medium Output - great humbucker for anyone wanting to play stuff you'd normally associate with high output humbuckers, but without going the whole hog. Strong bass presence, big mid scoop, bright top end, they're muscular, they're aggressive, they're responsive, but they're not as noisy as a blisteringly hot humbucker. |
Mucky Puppy |
10.2K, 7.3H, ???, Alnico II, Formvar |
Hard Blues, Rock, Punk |
Medium Output - the hottest "vintage" tone we make, its big, its brash, its raunchy, its fun! Not exactly the most refined pickup in the world, a fairly flat EQ with a slightly muted top end. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face from the first, window rattling, note. |
The Purist |
10k, ???,???,Alnico IV, Formvar |
Progressive, Hard Rock, Pop, Jazz |
Medium Output - much more refined then the Mucky Puppy despite the similarities, a stronger mid scoop and a slightly muted top end makes them a fantastic all-rounder. |
Wraith |
16K, 4.5H, 14nf, Ceramic, Formvar |
Metal, Rock, Punk |
High Output - a devastatingly hot humbucker! Once described by one of our endorsed artists as "like being hugged by your cell mate in prison" - its sleazy, its aggressive, you can throw whatever you want at a Wraith and it'll sit there smiling, asking if that’s all you've got! A real office favourite at Axesrus with its 3 magnet design. |
