Following on from the gradual phase out of the 5 hole config in 1959, the 8 hole setup has pretty much lasted the test of time to the modern day.

Initially created to combat the warping seen on early plates in hotter climates, the extra stability provided by the 3 extra screws kept the guitar looking like new for much longer. The 8 hole design is sometimes credited to Muddy Waters, who actually fitted 4 extra screws to his guitar(most likely a re-sprayed 50s model) but dates are sketchy at best, so that will probably remain a legend for many more years.

After 1988, the only thing that changed on the plate was the mounting for the neck pickup. Instead of the pickup mounting to the wood beneath the plate, as seen from 1950 - 1988, it mounted through the pickguard. Other then that, the plates, remained identical.

Please note, we haven't drilled these plates for top mounting pickups, but drilling is a simple process if you want a post 88 version.

A perfect fit for our Spec 1 control plates.
