Description Technical Specs

This is a kit including everything you'll need to wind a humbucker that will fit into the Wide Range routing found on the Telecaster® Deluxe, Custom and the Starcaster®

Now, heres where things get a little...murky, so its worth getting into the history of this style of pickup, and hope we can explain what we're thinking here.

A wide range humbucker, originally, used 10/32 UNC threaded CuNiFe rods in place of the steel poles * bar magnet you'd normally see on a humbucker and the spacing was overly wide (at 53.3mm) - and its those characteristics that made the the original Wide range pickups sound the way they did - very distinctive (and at the time, not all that popular!) - they were phased out with the Fender® re-shuffle in the 80s, and CuNiFe has become very rare since then.

Modern Examples, are different again - they use a different type of bobbin (the EZ bobbin) and a different base, which allowed the EZ bobbins terminations to be accessed outside of the pickup, and they use a different pole too, this time threaded steel rods, which required a bar magnet - so its closer to what you'd think of as a traditional humbucker at that point.

Now, the difference between a "modern" Wide range pickup, and the original is pretty clear cut - one uses truly magnetic poles, the other uses steel poles and a bar magnet. This kit is the later, nice and simple!

BUT - modern wide range humbuckers still differ from traditional humbuckers electrically - those larger pole screws actually increase the inductance of the pickup - so it will sound different, even with the same magnet/coils.

So, whilst this isn't close to being the kit you'd use to make a reproduction of the original, and its not the way to get a "traditional" humbucker tone, it is the best way to make a modern version of the wide range pickup.
