"Custom Assembly" using DiMarzio S Sized Humbuckers DiMarzio "Air Norton S" Single Coil Sized Humbucker DiMarzio "Area 58" Hum-Cancelling Single Coil
We know that buying a full set of pickups can be expensive, so with the release of the Axesrus Assemblies using DiMarzio pickups, we’re bringing out partial assemblies too. The Air Norton S™ is the Strat® replacement version of the full-size Air Nortons™. It’s warm sounding, very well balanced, and has the same unique tonal characteristics as the original. The original Air Norton™ wasn’t designed for a specific position or type of guitar, but it has become most popular in the neck position of trem-equipped guitars for progressive music. There are two major differences between a great vintage Strat® pickup and an average one: treble response and dynamics. A great pickup is clear and bright, but not thin-sounding. A great one makes the sound jump out of the amp when you pick hard and drop way down when you play softly, and the tone varies when the string is picked at different spots.

DiMarzio® has been working on serious vintage single-coil design with no hum for twelve years. Their goal has always been to capture the best qualities of pickups we heard from the 1950s and early 60s. We’ve played several pickups from the early 60s that had a unique tonality: they were steely, yet woody-sounding
The Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 was a watershed event in American music. When it was over, the world had heard and felt the sound of a Strat® in the hands of a master. Single-coils in 1967 were bright and very clean. And, of course, they hummed. We've captured the classic bright and clean sound but totally eliminated the hum with our patented Area™ technology. We've also reduced magnet pull by 40% for improved sustain and clarity. The Area 67™ has the chime of 60s pickups, and the 2 and 4 positions are light, bright and quack-happy. When DiMarzio started working with Billy Corgan on the pickups for his signature Strat®, they sent him several models to try out. He liked the Air Norton S™ in the neck, The Chopper™ in the middle and The Tone Zone® S in the bridge. After playing them on several gigs, he asked for some changes in the neck and bridge pickups - and that led to the BC Series!

After playing them on several gigs, he asked for some changes in the neck and bridge pickups - and that led to the BC Series! The Fast Track 1™ is hotter and more muscular than The Cruiser®, but it’s still very bright and clean sounding — not at all like a full-size humbucker. It’s not any bigger than a single-coil pickup, but the sound of the Fast Track 2™ puts it right in the wide open, “everything-on-11” school. It’s got three times the output of an average single-coil, with a huge mid-range and bass punch and a strong resemblance to the Super 3™.

The HS-2™ has history behind it. The HS™ series were the first humbucking Strat® replacement pickups we made in the early 1980s. Since then, the HS-2™ has become popular for two distinct qualities: in humbucking mode, it’s got a solid, natural sound that’s cleaner and brighter than a conventional humbucker, while single-coil mode creates one of the best vintage tones around. The HS-3™ has been the weapon of choice for Strat®-powered classical metal since the early 1980s. Far from being a high-output monster, the HS-3™ is actually a smooth and relatively quiet pickup that produces a sweet overdrive tone without jagged edges. It’s warm, it’s friendly, it sounds like a vintage PAF® and will drop right into your Strat®.

Joe Satriani is continually refining and sharpening his sound. Two years in the making, the Satch Track™ Neck is Joe’s first single-coil size signature pickup. Articulate, vocal and musical, it is our most advanced Fast Track-style pickup to date. The Super Distortion® S offers the performance of the famous Super Distortion® in a humbucking Strat® bridge direct replacement-size pickup. DiMarzio built in the same blend of power and tone that made the original Super Distortion® the worldwide standard for high-output humbuckers. The Chopper™ is the louder, punchier brother of the Fast Track 1™. More power is concentrated in the mids and low end for a bigger sound with more crunch.

If you’re a serious traditional Strat® player, you probably won’t want to know about pickups with side-by-side coils. But if you’re the player who’s up for something more modern with no 60-cycle hum, string drop-outs or sustain-killing magnet pull, we designed The Cruiser® for you. If you’re a serious traditional Strat® player, you probably won’t want to know about pickups with side-by-side coils. But if you’re the player who’s up for something more modern with no 60-cycle hum, string drop-outs or sustain-killing magnet pull, we designed The Cruiser® for you. Recently, Paul has been heavily into our Area™ pickups. He’s also been playing a lot of Racer X-style instrumentals, so the time was right for signature Paul Gilbert single-coil sized DiMarzio® pickups. The outcome of our teamwork are the new Injector™ Neck and Bridge Model pickups. You can hear them on Paul’s latest CD, “Fuzz Universe”.

DiMarzio "The Injector" Hum-Cancelling Single Coil - Neck DiMarzio "Tone Zone S" Single Coil Sized Humbucker DiMarzio "Virtual Solo" Hum-Cancelling Single Coil
We first heard about Paul Gilbert in the 1980s. Billy Sheehan told us about an amazing 18-year-old who had recently arrived in California and had blown everyone away with his musicianship, speed, and awesome technical ability in Racer X. Naturally, we immediately asked Paul to become a DiMarzio® endorser. It was the start of a great relationship. The Tone Zone® S brings the famous performance of The Tone Zone® to a humbucking Strat® replacement pickup. We’ve built in the tremendous mid-range and bass response of the original Tone Zone®, and the same patented dual-resonance design produces great harmonics We've combined the best qualities of the Virtual Vintage® Solo and Virtual Vintage® Solo Pro™ — high output and a full, warm sound — and pushed these qualities even further. Treble response is smoother, the lows are tighter, and there is more pick attack. Play hard, and the sound jumps out of the amp. Play softer, and the sound becomes cleaner and quieter. Naturally, there's no hum.

The Virtual Vintage® 54 Pro uses the same ground breaking technology as our Area 58™ and Area 61™ pickups. The Virtual Vintage® 54 Pro replaces the Virtual Vintage® 54 and VirtuAL 2® middle pickups. It has a warm, smoky sound, fattens up when you pick hard, and has a special grade of Alnico 2 magnet to reduce string pull. Like all of the Virtual Vintage® models, it’s dead quiet. What do you need in order to play blues with a Strat®? The Virtual Vintage® Blues has more power and warmth than a typical single-coil. You can really hear these qualities when you’re playing the Virtual Vintage® Blues. It withstands hard picking and opens up when you’re playing with an overdriven amp. Instead of shrinking away, the sound jumps out of the speakers. If you’ve heard the cliché that Alnico 2 means warm, soft sound, prepare to be surprised. This is not a polite pickup, and the closer it’s adjusted to the strings, the more raw it gets. In particular, the Alnico 2 magnetic field opens up all of the attack and definition of the low strings. It’s a hot pickup with a strong attack in the bridge position, and its Alnico 2 magnets allow it to work very well in the neck position as well, for players who want a very warm, round sound. If you want an in-your-face-and-proud-of-it sound, the Virtual Vintage® Heavy Blues 2 is the top pick.
