The Dolls house sized Hom of Tone

OK, full disclosure, the Mini Bourbon city isn’t, really, a Bourbon City – it doesn’t share an awful lot in common with its full sized big brother in terms of specification or design, and I wont pretend that it does, but, it does share a lot of the same “DNA” – and as much of a kop out as that sounds considering we usually write in very forthright terms with pickups – there is some logic to it.

Mini Humbuckers are, ultimately, limited by their size – there's no avoiding it. And, when your working within the traditional realm, that means, at maximum, your going to get 6K of 42 AWG on there, and that’s going to induce (accounting for the steel bar/pole screw combination within the bobbins) about 3.4H, and that’s not all that similar to the 8.2K/5.2H “vintage bruiser” that the true Bourbon city is…

That said? They’re both doing to same thing musically (and I’d maybe argue that ALL mini humbuckers in this style/spec, are doing similar things too) – a little more rounded, a little warmer, a little less “zesty” then a full sized humbucker, but just as suitable for that blues and rock guitar that we’re ultimately, all chasing. Giving this "pushed to its limits" sleazy, forgiving, slightly grungy, slightly barking, wonderful tone that really is very plug and play.

So, electrically, very different, tonally, quite different too if I’m being honest, but, just as suitable musically.

And as much as it pains me to say it? You’re a little stuck either way, because, ultimately, this all comes down to guitar routing. If your desperate for the tones of a full sized humbucker in a mini humbucker route? You’re a little out of luck sadly, I cant give you that, and I doubt anyone can – but the Min Bourbon is a fantastic example of that is possible with a mini humbucker, and is really worth considering before you consider cracking out the ¼” straight bit!

5 of 5 Humbucker warmth meets single coil clarity September 26, 2017

Craig built a custom Alnico 3 variant, (a "Classic 50's Deluxe" Mini), to partner a Knee Jerk (bridge) in a customised L/H Pacifica.

The Mini sounds like a thinner version of the full sized Classic 50's Deluxe, delivering the single coil clarity meets humbucker warmth I want. Great open sounding note-to-note clarity and dynamics.

When played gently the Mini sounds warm and Jazzy. When played harder the tonal change is more subtle in giving that single coil bite than Firebird minis. The 'thwack' of a Firebird but not quite the sparkle. More 'woof' than 'snarl', but more responsive than a PAF.

I hate distorted neck humbuckers, so was surprised how I like the driven tones of the Mini. The clarity under distortion and how easily this low output pickup can drive an amp surprised me.

When mixed with the Knee Jerk, there is pleasant phase cancellation, slight volume drop, leaving a bass-light tone very reminiscent of a Strat neck/middle mix tone.

VERDICT: LOVE IT!
